The Metal Detector tool allows you to detect magnetic metals like iron. It's useful for finding dropped keys or knives. It cannot detect coins or jewelry.

## Calibration
Calibrating the metal detector improves the accuracy of readings. To calibrate:

1. Hold your phone 2-3 inches (5-8 cm) above the ground with the screen facing up.
2. Press 'Calibrate'.
3. Recalibrate occasionally for accuracy.

The detector automatically calibrates when started.

## Detecting metal
The detector only finds magnetic metals like iron. To detect metal:

1. After calibrating, hold your phone 2-3 inches (5-8 cm) above the area to scan with the screen facing up.
2. Slowly move your phone, keeping the distance and orientation consistent.
3. When metal is detected, the phone will vibrate and indicate detection.

## Understanding readings
The graph shows magnetic field strength over time. Metal causes spikes up or down. If spikes occur that don't trigger the metal detector, lower the threshold to increase sensitivity.

Readings at the top of the screen show field strength in microteslas (uT).

## Threshold
Lower threshold values increase sensitivity. Higher values decrease it. Adjust with the on-screen slider.

## High sensitivity mode
This removes noise filtering for maximum sensitivity. The graph becomes noisier and false positives occur more frequently. Enable with the 'High sensitivity' switch.

## Audio feedback
Tapping the speaker icon in the top-right corner enables audio feedback. A tone will play when metal is detected, and the volume increases with field strength.

## Metal direction (experimental)
This experimental feature attempts to indicate metal direction with two on-screen dots. One points towards the metal and the other away from it. Unfortunately, it's uncertain which is which. Move your phone towards one dot; if the number in the center increases, you are getting closer. If the dots swap, it likely means you just passed over the metal. This requires a gyroscope sensor.

Enable it on 'Settings > Experimental > Show metal direction'.

The Lightning Strike Distance tool calculates how far away a lightning strike is. This helps you determine if a storm is approaching or moving away.

## Measuring distance
To use:

1. Press the lightning icon immediately after seeing lightning.
2. Press the thunder icon immediately after hearing thunder.
3. The distance to the strike will be displayed at the top of the screen.

If lightning is close enough to be dangerous, you will see a warning.

The bottom of the screen shows the distance to the most recent strike. If the current strike distance is less than the previous one, the storm is likely approaching. If it is greater, the storm is likely moving away.

The Light Meter tool measures a flashlight's beam distance, which is how far it can project usable light.

## Testing flashlight beam distance
To measure a flashlight's beam distance:

1. Go into a dark room.
2. Place your phone on the floor, screen up.
3. Enter the distance at which you will hold the flashlight from the phone (e.g., 3 feet / 1 meter).
4. Holding the flashlight at the set distance, point it at the phone screen and turn it on.
5. Move the flashlight around while maintaining the set distance and keeping it pointed at your phone.
6. Once the reading stops changing, the beam distance has been determined.
7. You can click 'Reset' to test another flashlight.

## Choosing an appropriate beam distance
The beam distance you need depends on how you will use the flashlight:
- For camping, a shorter beam lets you see your immediate surroundings.
- For hiking, a longer beam lets you see farther ahead - try starting with 300 feet (100 meters).

The Flashlight tool can be used to provide light or signal for help. As with any tool in Trail Sense, it is always best to carry a real flashlight with you.

## Flashlight
Tap the flashlight button to toggle the flashlight on or off. When the flashlight is on (in any mode), a notification will be displayed to allow you to quickly turn it off.

On supported devices, you can adjust the brightness using the slider at the bottom.

## Strobe
Drag the dial to the desired strobe frequency. Tap the flashlight button to toggle the strobe on or off.

Please note that the strobe feature contains flashing lights, which may be dangerous for some users. Prolonged use of the strobe may cause excess battery drain or damage to your camera's flash.

## SOS
Drag the dial to the SOS indicator to continuously play the SOS distress signal (3 short, 3 long, 3 short). Tap the flashlight button to toggle the SOS on or off.

## Screen
You can use your screen as a flashlight, which may be better for close-up work. Tap the screen button to start. From there, you can adjust the brightness using the slider at the bottom, and toggle the color between red (preserves night vision) and white (brighter) using the button at the top.

Press back or tap the 'Turn off' button to turn off the screen flashlight. Your settings will be saved for next time.

## Automatically turn off
You can set the flashlight to automatically turn off after a certain amount of time by enabling 'Settings > Flashlight > Automatically turn off' and selecting the desired time. This can be useful to save battery if you forget to turn off the flashlight.

## Toggle with volume buttons
You can set the flashlight to toggle on or off when you press either volume button by enabling 'Settings > Flashlight > Toggle with volume buttons'. This only works while Trail Sense is open.

The Diagnostics tool can be used to detect common issues that impact tools in Trail Sense. If you are experiencing issues with the app, try running the diagnostics tool to see if it can detect the issue.

## Diagnostics list
Trail Sense will list any warnings or errors that it detects. Warnings will have a yellow icon, and errors will have a red icon.

You can click on each item to see more information about the issue and how to resolve it.

The diagnostics tool can detect:
- Poor sensor accuracy
- Missing sensors
- Missing permissions

The Clouds tool assists you in tracking and predicting weather patterns by identifying clouds. If your phone is equipped with a barometer, Trail Sense can merge cloud observations with barometer readings to enhance weather prediction on the Weather tool.

## Cloud log
In the cloud log, you'll find the last 48 hours of cloud observations. Each row includes the observation time, cloud type, and potential weather indications. Click on a row for more details about the cloud, including its description, possible weather outcomes, precipitation chances, and common precipitation types it can generate. To delete an observation, use the menu button located on the right of each row. Additionally, you can click on the cloud image to view a larger version.

## Logging a cloud
To log a cloud, tap the '+' button at the bottom-right. You can choose to use a picture of the cloud from your device's files or camera, or manually identify the cloud.

### Automatic identification
If you opt to use the camera or a file, Trail Sense will make an attempt to identify the cloud for you. It will display its confidence in each cloud type and allow you to select the cloud types you wish to log using the checkboxes. By default, it selects the most likely cloud type(s). You can also adjust the observation time by clicking on the time at the top of the screen. Once you're satisfied with the observation, click the checkmark button at the top-right of the screen.

### Manual identification
If you choose to manually identify the cloud, you will see a list of cloud types. Use the checkboxes to select the cloud types you want to log. You can also adjust the observation time by clicking on the time at the top of the screen. Once you're satisfied with the observation, click the checkmark button at the top-right of the screen.

## Quick action
You can enable the Cloud Scanner quick action in the settings for the tab where you want it to appear.

Tapping the quick action button will open your camera to take a picture of a cloud to identify. Long pressing the button will open the Clouds tool.

The Clock tool can be used to determine the current time using the GPS satellites.

## Viewing GPS time
When you first open the Clock tool, it shows your device's set time. Once you get a GPS fix, the clock automatically updates to show precise GPS time. To refresh the GPS time, tap the refresh icon in the top-left.

## Syncing Your Clock
To sync your device’s clock with GPS time:

1. Tap 'Update system time'.
2. Note the time shown in the pop-up.
3. Tap 'OK' to open your device's time settings.
4. Enter the noted time and wait for the sync notification before saving.
5. Save the time update when the notification arrives.
6. Your system time is now synced with GPS time.

## Digital clock
If you prefer a digital clock, you can switch to it by turning off the 'Analog clock' setting in the Clock tool's settings. This will show a large digital clock on the screen.

The Clinometer tool measures angles and can be used to determine the slope of a hill, the height of an object, or the distance to an object. It can also be used to determine avalanche risk.

The following guide uses a tree as an example, but the same steps can be used for any object.

## Measure a slope
To measure a slope (or any angle), align the line in the center of the viewfinder with the top of the hill. Tapping anywhere on the screen will lock the clinometer, and tapping again will unlock it.

Alternatively, you can use the side of your phone to measure a slope. To do this, tap the screen icon in the top-left. Then hold your phone vertically and use the side (where the volume and power buttons are normally located) of your phone to sight. Look down the side of your phone and point it at the top of the hill. You will see the angle change at the top of the screen.

The slope percentage or grade is also shown under the angle.

If you would prefer to lock the angle using the volume buttons instead of tapping the screen, you can enable this in Settings > Clinometer > Lock with volume buttons.

The angle measurements will also be displayed on the camera viewfinder.

## Measuring avalanche risk
Most avalanches occur on slopes between 30° (57%) and 45° (100%). When you measure the angle of a slope, the avalanche risk will be displayed at the bottom of your screen. You can also use the color bands on the clinometer dial; red indicates high risk, yellow indicates moderate risk, and green indicates low risk.

## Estimate the height of a tree
The height of a tree can be measured if the distance to the tree is known.

1. Tap the ruler icon in the top-right.
2. Tap 'Height'.
3. Enter the distance to the tree.
4. Align the clinometer to the base of the tree.
5. Tap the screen and hold.
6. Realign the clinometer to the top of the tree.
7. Release to lock and see the height of the tree.

If you normally measure the height of trees at the same distance, you can set a default distance in Settings > Clinometer > Baseline distance.

## Estimate the distance to a tree (known height)
If you know the height of a tree, you can estimate the distance to it by using the clinometer.

1. Tap the ruler icon in the top-right.
2. Tap 'Distance'.
3. Enter the height of the tree.
4. Align the clinometer to the base of the tree.
5. Tap the screen and hold.
6. Realign the clinometer to the top of the tree.
7. Release to lock and see the distance to the tree.

## Estimate the distance to a tree (unknown height)
If you do not know the height of the tree, you can still estimate the distance to it by using your height as a reference.

1. Tap the ruler icon in the top-right.
2. Tap 'Distance'.
3. Enter your height.
4. Stand next to the tree and take note of where the top of your head is on the tree.
5. Walk away from the tree to the place where you want to measure the distance.
6. Align the clinometer to the base of the tree.
7. Tap the screen and hold.
8. Realign the clinometer to where the top of your head was on the tree.
9. Release to lock and see the distance to the tree.

## Disclaimer
Trail Sense uses a general rule of thumb to determine if a slope has avalanche potential, which is limited by your phone's sensors. If you think a slope is unsafe, then try to find an alternate route to avoid it or take precautions.

The Climate tool displays historical climate data for a given location.

## Temperature
The historical high and low temperatures are displayed at the top of the screen for the selected date. The chart also displays high temperatures as a red line and the low temperatures as a blue line.

The freezing point is displayed in the bottom portion of the chart as a filled area.

## Changing the date
To change the date, you can tap the calendar icon above the chart and select a date. Additionally, you can use the arrows to move to the next/previous date or long press the calendar to quickly jump to today's date.

Tapping on one of the lines on the chart will also change the date to the point you tapped.

## Changing the location
By default, your current location is used. If you want to change this, enter a new location in the input field below the chart. You can also change the elevation using the elevation input field.

## Accuracy
Climate normals are based on the 30-year average of the historical data and indicate what the weather usually is. The actual values may differ for a variety of reasons but should remain fairly close to the historical values. Large differences are normally due to a storm or other weather event.

Historic temperatures are estimated using a custom 30-year "climate normal" model derived from the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office - MERRA-2 data (1991 - 2020).
